Exercise Physiology

Our focus is to understand mechanisms and interactions of respiratory, cardiovascular, neuro-muscular and metabolic adaptations to acute and chronic exercise in humans with the aim of developing new training strategies and technologies for improving athletic performance, promoting sustained health and improving the rehabilitation of patients with cardio-respiratory, neuro-muscular and metabolic diseases. For this purpose, we use state-of-the-art technologies to assess respiratory and airway mechanics, cardio-vascular properties and function, specific muscle oxygenation and fatigue, as well as specific muscular and whole-body performance in studies including healthy individuals and different groups of patients. For students of HST and other ETH curricula we provide class room and laboratory teaching in clinically-oriented physiology and exercise physiology.
